President Trump: Truth Social Post
President Trump announced on Truth Social that he had just finished a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump described the call as very productive, saying the discussion went extremely well. According to Trump, a key outcome of the conversation is that Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin formal negotiations with the aim of achieving a ceasefire and, even more significantly, putting an end to the ongoing war.
President Trump emphasized that the terms and conditions for the ceasefire and peace settlement will be determined directly by Russia and Ukraine themselves. He argued this is necessary because only the parties involved are fully aware of all the intricacies and details required for successful negotiations. Trump remarked that the overall tone and spirit of his conversation with Putin were excellent and positive; he added that he would have honestly reported if it had not gone well.
During the call, Trump said President Putin expressed a strong interest in establishing large-scale trade relations with the United States once the conflict in Ukraine has ended. Trump agreed that such trade could present enormous opportunities for Russia, potentially leading to the creation of significant numbers of jobs and new wealth. He described Russia’s economic potential as “unlimited.” Trump also noted that Ukraine stands to benefit greatly from enhanced trade, especially as it undertakes the process of rebuilding its country after the devastation of war.
President Trump stated that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately. After speaking with President Putin, Trump quickly informed several other world leaders of these developments. He reached out to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine; Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; President Emmanuel Macron of France; Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy; Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany; and President Alexander Stubb of Finland. He briefed all of them on what had transpired during his call with Putin and the next steps toward negotiations.
Trump mentioned that the Vatican, through the Pope, has expressed a strong interest in hosting these negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He concluded his post by calling for the peace process to begin.
